The Miraculous Story Of The Astronaut’s Wife
Posted on September 25, 2008 in Media by Andy @ Yellow Swordfish6 Comments »

My JDOCD suffering wife can not, of course, resist anything connected with Johnny Depp which includes the rather second-rate movie The Astronaut’s Wife and I stumbled upon the book (pictured) this morning, obviously picked up second hand when she was in town yesterday.

Leaving aside the story and the quality of the prose – which as I have no intention of ever reading it will always remain in doubt – the book really does have a somewhat miraculous genesis. On the front cover, which you may just be able to make out, it claims:

Based upon the motion picture…

On the back cover however, are the words:

Now a major motion picture…

A bit of a paradox then this book.

    Well Rand Ravich wrote the screenplay for the movie in 1999 and then that screenplay became the book – as often happens. That would explain the first comment. With both movie and book coming out in 1999, the 2nd comment can then be true too as in the advertising world, the word ‘now’ is often abused.

    How often do we see an ad on tv for a cd and it’s described as being “the new album from so and so” when it’s been out for many months and they just want to give it a bit of a new push in sales.

    I’m just amazed there is a ’space’ movie out there I’ve never seen…….poor rating or not.

    @Silverback: It’s not dire. it’s just one of those films where you keep wanting to knock peoples heads together for being so dumb.

    Re your wife’s JDOCD suffering — my condolences. I cannot imagine the torment you both have to endure.

    Yup, it’s a tut and sigh sort of flick that one. I’ve not even replaced my Video copy with a dvd and you know how big a fan I am Andy.(That one and ‘Nick of Time’.) I didn’t know there was a book though but I’m not surprised she bought it even just for the novelty value; at £1.50p it would have been difficult to leave it on the shelf.

    Now, how do you know I didn’t get that book as a gift for someone? ;)

    @Mrs YSF: Well… I know it’s my birthday in a weeks time….nah, you wouldn’t.
    And it’s second hand….
