Two and a half years ago I wrote up a piece about designer spectacles entitled I’m Getting So Tired Of The Word ‘Designer’. At the time I was facing my two-yearly battle with the selection of spectacle frames available in high street opticians. All they ever had on offer were small oblong shaped frames because, of course, they were fashionable.
Now I don’t know about you, but as far as I am concerned ‘fashion’ ought to stay in the heads of those designers who believe they set the trends. Why on earth I should be expected to sacrifice ocular comfort because some puffed up smidgen of blowfish shit from Milan decrees I simply must wear small oblongs on my nose is beyond me. It’s patently obvious that these self-styled gurus do not wear glasses.
As I had done before – I had the optician order up some frames from the Saville Row collection (made by a company called Algha) so I was able to continue my preference for round eye-wear. Pictured are my latest specs sporting those very frames.
This year however, things have been a little different. My optician still has the same old oblong garbage on the racks and if I want round frames they still have to be ordered specially. But this year I was told by two different people at the shop that instead of being behind the fashion – in my case by about 40 years! – I am, in fact ahead of it. Round frames are due to make a comeback! So says Armani. Or was it Gucci? One of those anyway.
You can just imagine them can’t you – sitting around their conference table trying to decide what to do next in spectacle frames when some new spotty kid on the block puts up a tentative hand and says “what about round? We’ve never done round. We’ve done oblong, square, ovals… but never round.”
“Brilliant!”
So here I am, starting a trend. Although I’ll believe it when I see it. And I’ll need to be wearing my glasses to see it of course.
I’ve worn glasses since I was five and always hated them. I know I’ve spent far too long hiding behind huge round Deirdre Barlow-type frames so I’m quite grateful for the smaller oblong ones. But round ones, no doubt, suit you, and I agree that there should be always be a choice of shapes, because people come in a choice of faces.

Could not agree more or write it better myself I have a round pair which I am very happy and comfortable with but in any optometry shop I can not find any decent round frames I have succumbed for a while and used an oblongs one but I hated it and went back to my round frame which is getting a bit old I wish there were was more choice in the shops rather than what the fashion dictates for this year. if you have got any sites for shops that sell round frames (at reasonable price ) I would appreciate because even on the intranets the choice for around frames is very limited
thank you
