When Is A London Cheesecake Not A London Cheesecake?
Posted on July 23, 2008 in Personal by Andy @ Yellow Swordfish6 Comments »

My appeal for a source of London Cheesecakes drew a few names of bakeries where they are available but none, alas, without me squandering a tankful of petrol to get there!

So – interested I was when someone calling themselves “BT’ left a comment stating you could get them in Aldi supermarkets. Now I went in an Aldi once when they first opened up in this area but that was many years ago so you can imagine my excitement. Well – maybe that’s a bit over the top. Imagine my curiosity instead.

And yesterday I had to pass the Aldi so it was the obvious time to stop and go see. And there, in the picture above, is the package I came out with. Pre-wrapped and called ‘Cheesecakes’ from some outfit in Chelmsford, Essex called ‘Peacock’. I have to say they didn’t look that good but it was worth shelling out 99p to at least give them the benefit of the doubt.

Suffice it to say I managed only one bite and later wished I had spat that one out. These are a travesty. These are not the London Cheesecakes I am looking for. These are blocks of stodge with the wrong label on them. I think they may be made of playdough. If the Cake Police ever encounter these fraudulent confections they wll have to close down the factory and hold a public enquiry.

If you want to discover the delight of a good London Cheesecake – give these things a very wide berth!

By the way – Mike Power gave me a recipe and instructions on how to make them. And I want to do this. The problem is that I have been, so far, totally unable to locate a source of ‘threaded’ coconut. if they sell that in Aldi it will probably taste like string.

    Threaded coconut is another name for shredded coconut. You can get it here:

    but it might be socked in a good local health food shop.
    btw have you tried Coventry God Cakes? They are like a triangular eccles cake on centuries older.

    @Gallimaufry: Marvellous. Thanks for the link. I have done the rounds of all the local health food shops and none of them could even get it in (they said).
    My order will go in today! Thanks again.
    Never tried or heard of your Coventry God cakes – mind you of they are really centuries old I’m not sure I want to :) – Seriously, next time I am in the area I will try and hunt one down.

    Aldi brioche is to be avoided too. Even the birds don’t want it.
    I’m looking forward to sampling your attempts at making these Andy. I’ll be bringing back up supplies with me next visit though so we don’t get disappointed.

    I don’t mean to be funny, but couldn’t you… say… buy a coconut, and then grate it? The stuff on top of these “cheesecakes” you keep showing pictures of looks just like grated carrot, only made out of coconut, and I seem to recall the two having a similar kind of consistency…

    @Jake: Am looking into it….
