One of my all time favourite rants – and there have been a few items on this site – concerns the passing of the independent, specialist retailer who knew his product line inside out and, what’s more, always had whatever you needed on the shelf. He could dispense wisdom and advice because he was steeped in knowledge of what he sold. One of my better items on this subject concerned the probability in this B&Q dominated world of buying a single, imperial threaded wingnut. Go and try it! Alas, all such shops have disappeared from my local city.
But today I found one in a neighbouring town still flourishing and was, to be honest, astounded. Just look at the picture? Look at those cabinets! No kidding – these people would have let me buy a single nut. Marvellous!
Regal Knobs? Don’t ask me. But if you want one these people sell them. That’s what it says on the front of the drawer – far right, second drawer down!
Nice shop, you can’t tell us all this and then not tell us where the shop is.
@Drew: Harrison and Dunn – Stamford – Lincolnshire.
These shops are indeed rare. Especially when I was looking for fittings for sash windows – 180yrs old no rot and no drafts. But had lost all their brass fittings.
Farm supply shops still have this sort of service and appearance. Such as in Perth Scotland – Peddies Supplies – you get the goods – a sash weight and some cord in my case and then take your chit into the wood paneled side office to pay.
The big stores have already eaten up the big towns selling us the illusion of choice – only the remote and smaller places to go and that’s happening as we watch.
Cheers
@Scotty: Without a revolution I sadly don’t see any of them lasting much longer either
we have this great shop near us called Sid Telfers. They stock everything, and the guys that work there REALLY know there stuff!!
