I feel sure that if you can remember the TV series ‘Blake’s 7′ then you most probably have fond memories of it. It was, on balance, an interesting mix of adventurous television making on a very low budget. In fact, I well recall a comment made, I believe, by the producers that a single episode of ‘Blake’ had about the same budget as a ‘Star Trek’ coffee break.
So let’s see. What do I remember. I recall flimsy sets and even flimsier acting; grandiose title music; perhaps one of the first series where the writers felt free to kill off main characters; at least one whole series of ‘Blake’s 7′ with no Blake, or, for that matter, only 6 of them (I believe); the irascible ORAC; Servalan (who could forget her or her haircut?) and, of course, Avon – to mention just a few.
I remember being struck at the time that this disparate group of so-called ‘freedom fighters’ throwing stones at the evil ‘Federation’ seemed far more interested in treachery and deceit towards their fellow travellers than they did about liberating the galaxy. But it was good fun even if it seemed to totally lose it’s way after the first series.
But Blake fans everywhere will either be thrilled or appalled at the news that Sky television is planning to remake them. To quote:
The satellite channel has given the green light for the development of two 60-minute scripts for a “potential event series”.
Yes – that really does say “potential event series”. Sounds like ‘Federation Speak’ to me.
(If you happen to be a true ‘Blake’s 7′ fan then you must check out this site from Steven Locke where he appears to have re-created just about every Blake aspect in Lego. Some people really ought to get out more).
I hope it is as good as the new BSG and not like the new gay friendly pc joke that Dr.Who is.
@thud: OK… this is where I say (as I have before) that I watch virtually no television. So I haven’t seen a Dr Who since I was about 15! In fact, I lost interest when Jon Pertwee became the Time lord. But ‘BSG’? no… what is it?
@thud: Ah! Got it. Battlestar Galactica. yes? No.. never seen one of those either. is it good?
Now where did I put my VCR, I still have some episodes on tape.
I loved the original series.
I love the new Dr Who and Torchwood, good old-fashioned BBC sci-fi
I’ve not watched BSG, but most people at work say the new series is great.
@thud, couldn’t agree more about Dr.Who, but I did watch the Dr. Who Christmas edition – but not for the acting !! (and I know I’m sad before you tell me)
@Drew: You’re old enough?
old enough for thr original Blake’s 7, not Dr Who!
@Drew: if I recall correctly I was 10 when Dr Who started with William Hartnell. I loved it!
Andy..BSG is sci fi for adults…requires a little bit of attention and thought to get the best out of it..plus..robot sex babes!…keeps the lads interested…even older ones like me.
@thud: Well. Who could resists robot sex babes! I’ll have to give it a try…
I loved Blake’s Seven. Outstandingly cheap nonsense. I once worked for the guy who designed Servelan’s outfits. He also did Shirley Bassey’s (you can see a connection) LOL.
Hey Andy – we didn’t have that one over here but they did the same thing with my childhood really-cheaply-made after-school pastime. It was called ‘Dark Shadows” and was basically a soap opera with vampires, ghosts, witches, werewolves, etc… REALLY bad acting, sets that would fall down but they couldn’t afford to re-shoot so they just left them, etc. I LOVED it when I was in grade school and now they’re out on DVD – if you can get through alot of the tedious boring parts, they’re hilariously funny!
But they tried to remake it – with much better acting & effects… didn’t last long though!

@ozgirl2: I’m not sure I can think of many remakes that worked with the possible exception of Heavan Can Wait (Warren Beatty annd Julie Christie)
