It’s been a bit of a bumper morning today for decent ‘West Lothian’ items. Anything that helps to get the message across is a good thing but many of the posts get muddled or vindictive and to those I usually wont link. But three goodies this morning.
First up is Max Hastings writing in that bastion of truth, honesty and good journalism, The Daily Mail. (Yes, I was being sarcastic). In the article How much longer will we have to put up with Scots spending so much of our money?, Hastings explains the ‘Scottish question’ in as few words as possible without getting muddled and it is a good read as well as good to see a mainstream daily rag starting to wield the cudgel. Some of the comments are worth a read as well – it is interesting to note that worried Scots are still hurling abuse about us being ‘anti’ when in fact we are only ‘anti’ the current political and financial disparity highlighted well by Hastings.
Next up is fellow Witanagemot member Wonko who concentrates his ire on Free Prescriptions For All, and quite rightly so. Wonko has produced a good eye-catching graphic as well – a sort of chart of English grievances.
And finally another Witanagemot member, Waking Hereward, explains something I didn’t know: Why it is easier for rural living Scotsmen to find a petrol station than for rural living Englishmen. Plus the usual of course, that we are paying for it. Read Petrol Tensions – perhaps another item for Wonko to add to his chart!
Scotland is a beautiful country and, on the whole, I have always rather liked the Scots that I personally have met or know. But it’s got to stop.
The day has arrived, I never thought it could happen, but, yes I have actually purchased a copy of the Mail on Sunday, it seemed unbiased and reasonable, I promptly put the paper down and went to the pub.
Does this mean I have become right wing, or has the centre moved so far to the left ??
I too think Scotland is a beautiful country, and would say that I have more Scottish friends that people from that strange place inside the M25, but there does seem to be a lack of fairness, and I can’t stand that, I think you are right, it has got to stop.
I liked the Max hastings piece because he argued the case fairly. He is absolutely right about the over representation in particular and it is no longer cynical to think that this is Labour engineering as it has now become so obvious. Every time I hear MacBroon ramble on about ‘our country’ or about ‘Britain’ I want to line him and his Scottish cabinet (along with Jack Straw) up against a wall somewhere and throw, er… throw… Frenchmen at them.
Democracy – even the flawed democracy we practice here – died with devolution.
What amazes me is that David limp-wristed Cameron and his fellow Tories are not banging on about this and making it their issue. Indeed Cameron has stated that he would retain the Barnett Formula should he get elected to Number 10.
The Daily Mail – and I assume the Mail on Sunday – makes great firelighting paper…
