The Internet’s A Funny Old Thing
Posted on May 27, 2007 in Personal by Andy @ Yellow Swordfish5 Comments »

The arrival of mass participation in email and the Internet was, for some soothsayers, a backward step in human communication. The impersonal nature of email, we were warned, would destroy personal interaction and face to face contact. And the ability both email and the Internet give us to hide behind fake persona’s and to even act out of character could distort our personality. The meek could be bold, the shy could be garrulous. And in complete safety.

I can see and understand the arguments and of course it may well be true for many people. But for my wife and I it has opened up all kinds of new avenues. She is currently in Los Angeles having lots of fun with about 15 other friends all of whom live in another country to her and all of whose friendship was harvested initially from Internet connections. Indeed her closest friend, for several years now, lives about 4000 miles away.

And tonight I enjoyed dinner with a couple here in southern Utah who I had never met before but who again was an Internet connection – in this case starting out from a forum. And hey – guess what – we both agreed that we met the people we expected to meet. Neither of us were an axe-murderer, neither of us were hiding something behind an electronic personality. And I had a great and interesting evening.

And for my finale tonight – one of today’s photos from Utah taken this time at Kodachrome State Park beside a swirling roller-coaster of a road that was just made for a Harley. Sadly, I was not riding one…

Really nice shot, Andy!! I loved southern Utah – all the parks there are just gorgeous – and different from each other too! If you get a chance, go to Arches Nat’l Park – that was my favorite for hiking

Is J at a JD event?

You can read about that – just click here
    Where is Arches?

Arches is somewhere between Bryce & Canyonlands, I think – don’t have a map handy… Lots of natural stone arches and some great hiking! I think Bryce has it though, for sheer stunning breathtaking beauty… or DOES it? All of them are nice!

Have fun on the rest of your trip!

Hey, Welcome to Vancouver – if that is where you are. I am sitting inside on this beautiful day about to install your forum plugin on our community site (using WP 2.2 no doubt). Drop me an email for free access to our event on Saturday June 2 while you are in our fine city, (if you and you wife are into that sort of thing. Cheers, Paul

Yes – still here (North shore) but pretty busy, booked and planned. Sounds like fun though :)
Hope the forum works out for you…
