The Grand Canyon And JDOCD Group Therapy
Posted on May 17, 2007 in Personal by Andy @ Yellow Swordfish5 Comments »

If all goes to plan, this day in exactly one weeks time, I should be fulfilling a long-term ambition and be in the middle of a visit to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. This has been on my list of ‘things to do before I die’ for many years now and while the trip is going to involve huge amounts of driving without too much time at any one place, I am looking forward to it enormously. I shall also be visiting Bryce Canyon in southern Utah which is, for me, icing on the cake. And this all despite my reluctance to get in an airplane once again – that’s how much a visit to the Grand Canyon is able to sway me.

This all came about because my JDOCD suffering wife wanted to go on a weeks residential JDOCD group therapy session in Los Angeles but didn’t want to travel there alone. Yet I wanted her to go of course – anything that might aid her affliction. Apparently there are something like 14 women from all over – all with ‘hard-core’ JDOCD – going to be there to engage in therapeutic activities like being forced to watch all three ‘pirates’ movies back to back and being made to crawl on their hands and knees down the Hollywood ‘Walk of Fame’ to place their hands in the ‘Johnny’ imprints. No doubt there will be discussion sessions where they can talk about their obsessive-compulsive behaviour with other sufferers – a bit like a specialised ‘AA’ meeting. And all being well – hopefully those hosting this event will be able to help to improve the life of these unfortunate women and offer strategies to help them return to normal.

You know – I just read that last paragraph back and it sounds a little to me like this might not be good therapy at all. I mean, you put 14 women with JDOCD in the same room and isn’t it just going to result in a week long orgasm of Johnny worship?

Well – either way, I get to visit the Grand Canyon and even Las Vegas!

I hope you enjoy your trip to the Grand Canyon as much as my son and daughter-in-law did back in January of this year. Here is the link to his Flickr photoset of the trip … just to whet your appetite. As for the JDOCD affliction your wife suffers, I’m afraid I can offer any help there.

Thanks – nice set of photos. I won’t miss that snow however!

Oh blast….as I mentioned in your Bryce blog above, I too was in intense JDOCD therapy in Los Angeles last week. My group of ten truly disturbed, dysfuntional women also did the Marathon at the El Capitan (is that called “immersion therapy” I wonder??) and polished Johnny’s star with…oh, um nevermind that. We placed our hands in his handprints, feet in his footprints, at Graumann’s Chinese theater. We had hot dogs at Carnie’s, right below his LA residence (and have pictures of the turrets). We spent from 3:00 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. in Disneyland on Saturday, the 19th, waiting along the Red Carpet….and a life-goal was achieved, as I actually touched his arm and expressed my heartfelt appreciation for him turning me into a rabid, obsessed fan whose “hobby” has alienated friends and family and caused endless discussions among them about sanitariums and custodial care…

I would have LOVED to have somehow met your wife and friends and, with my friends, have a group validation (not that it would have been necessary…but they are SO fun!). Hope she had as great an experience as we did…

Now it’s back to real life (which is SO anticlimactic)….

Oops….that should have been 3:00 a.m. until 8:30 P.M. on the Disneyland Red Carpet…which somehow makes it sound like I do need that custodial care….

Yes – sounds like her group and your group all did about the same stuff. I will be writing this p later today if I get the chance…
