I love Gmail, especially in conjunction with Firefox Gmail Manager. Brilliant spam filtering, search and threads. I still use Mail for some things but Gmail rocks for me :)

I didn't know Entourage had any limits although I suppose there has to be something. I'll stick with Thunderbird a little longer and see if Leopard brings any Apple Mail improvements along with it. There is always hope!

How did I retire. Wow - that's a long story. Put simply, I was lucky enough to be able to afford to I guess. Up until 'goodbye' day I was a humble coder who wrote no code anymore - just got other people to do it! My strengths are really more in software design and problem solving anyway. But I missed coding hence the surge into php since then, which was new to me when I started a couple of years back. Keeps the grey cells active!

The URL's are all WordPress. Mine are set up as

<blockquote>/%post_id%/%postname%/</blockquote>

so I didn't have to do anything which is just as well as that sort of thing is not my strong suit at all.

And thanks for the kind words. I've had this design in place now for getting what must be about 9-10 months and I am starting to tire of it to be honest. Changng it is all part of the fun!

Ahhh... now THAT makes sense!

Using Gmail as a cool spam filter is an awesome idea.

The challenge I had with Entourage is:

1) I need it on all my machines (I am on 3 separate Macs, plus 2 that do occasional duty). Needed complete integration of a POP solution.

2) The total file limit in Entourage has killed me 5 times in the last 3 years. The older version had a 2 gig limit. The new one is double that. Hit the limit, and it's ugly trying to recover anything worthwhile.

Off topic:

1) How did you retire? What were you doing up to that point in recent years?

2) How do you craft your pages to have SEO-friendly URL's? All of your page URL's rock. Now that I'm all about Wordpress (just migrated from TypePad... ahhh, the sense of freedom is amazing!). I've looked at all of the available plugins for creating SEO URL's, and they seem to be POST-centric, not PAGE-centric (the way we design sites). Any ideas?

Andy, your blog/site is really amazing. Your plugins are awesome as well. Look for a PayPal bonus soon.
Best,

At the moment I am still slugging it out with Thunderbird and remembering just what it was I didn't like fist time around. It doesn't have an 'outbox' so when you click on 'send' the email just sits there while the system makes contact with the server - logs you in and then sends it. Why it can't just move it to an outbox and do all that in the background I don't know but it's sloooow!
Plus whilst it's threading is accurate, the keyboard handling to hone in on a threaded item is abysmal.

I must be one of the only people that really, passionately dislikes the GMail interface! To be perfectly honest, there is absolutely nothing I like about it although it does seem to have just about the best spam detection I've come across. For that alone I am toying with having al my email forwarded to GMail and then pop3'ing it down from there already filtered! Very tempting.

I do recall liking Entourage and I still have my 'X' copy but I can't remember why I decided to dump it.... which is worrying!

Hi Andy,

I'm currently having a deep love affair with Gmail (Google's browser-based mail app). Add Gmail Notifier for Mac, and you have a nice system that has rockin' spam, and deep thread management.

Just a thought. I still miss the cleanliness of Entourage. But there are so many things I DON'T miss about Entourage, that I'm fine now...

Best of success. Update us when you get a moment.

Actually, my eldest son uses it and I was planning on asking him to show me next time I'm at his place. I have not checked though so I don't know if there is a Mac version available. But I do know he has made it his client of choice.

Have you looked at The Bat? I don't personally like it (LOVE t'bird....) but I know people who swear by it. Of course, it's not free after you use the trial. Then again, I'm personally never averse to paying for software that REALLY WORKS and FITS ME.

Which The Bat didn't. But if it had, I'd have paid for it cheerfully....

Thanks Drew!
Actually (joking aside) , Entourage, the Apple version of Outlook that comes with MS Office is pretty damn good. I'd completely forgotten I had that on my machine. I still use Word... but that's a different story! Yes - I'll take another look at that actuaily.
