Arthur Lee And Love
Posted on August 5, 2006 in Personal by Andy @ Yellow Swordfish2 Comments »

I was saddened to hear this morning of the death of Arthur Lee. I guess that as I get older I have to expect the icons of my youth to start to disappear from the world stage and Lee’s death comes hot on the heels of that other unstable icon Syd Barrett.

It was what, 1967? The music being played everywhere came from the Beatles, Stones, Animals… a long list of that 60’s explosion that briefly saw England dominate the new music scene. A friend of mine went to visit relatives in the USA – not so easy or affordable in 1966. He came back armed with half a dozen long playing recordings of music he had heard while there and immediately fallen in love with. When I first heard them, I did the same. Amongst this new breed of exciting music: Country Joe and the Fish, The Grateful Dead, The Doors and at the time my favourite, the exciting Da Capo album from Love.

Arthur Lee was a one-off if unstable talent. Somewhere along the line I had lost my old copy of Forever Changes and a few years ago went out and bought it on CD. It still sounds fresh, invigorating, different and exciting. Sadly, unlike most of the other major bands that fuelled that American West Coast sound, I never had the opportunity to see Love perform and, of course, the original band were very short lived.

As I said last year about Pink Floyd, Love were a part of my life’s soundtrack and I am grateful for that. I know that I will be taking Forever Changes with me on my next car journey.

I recently went out and bought newer CD’s of Love. I think i have a del capo album but nothing to play it on. I can remember when 7 and 7 is came out on the radio in Hollywood..
Arthur dying just reminds me of my mortality and what i need to pass on to my kids..
He was in jail for a while, he was drinking and firing a gun in the air, so he went to prison for a little while, I thought I would be able to see him play again sometime around California..
