This is a plug for one of the best articles I have encountered on the politics of multiculturalism. I have bemoaned this political agenda before but found the article by Kenan Malik published in Prospect Magazine to be quite enlightening, intelligent and coherent.
Thanks to Northwing for publishing the article in full. As is stated there:
I was prepared to search hard for a British Asian rebuff of multiculturalism. In the end I didn’t have to look far. Kenan Malik, a Mancunian, born in India, has written some excellent material on the subject.
Go and read it. It is well worth ten minutes of your time.
Very good article by Kenan Malik, Andy. It kept me busy during long,long wait at A&E. where I sat with my mixed-race son among many people of many nationalities and cultures. Dispite a few attempts on my part, no one spoke to each other but the children played happily together under the silent scowls of their guardians. Malik makes a point I have long held that focusing people only on their differences can only lead to deep divisions and tribal mentality. I mentioned Multiculturalism to a friend recently and before I was able to give my current stance on it he scoffed. Being of mixed race himself and adopted by a White Irish mother and Black American father he wasn’t raised with a strong sense of cultural indentity. He has been mistaken for a Rastafiarian and Islamic, shunned by Muslims when it became apparent that he was not and strongly believes that respect for diversity is good but compartmentalising of cultures is the road to disaster.
@Jeni
I have never really understood how, what surely is a minority of people who have these views, are able to push them to the fore to become some sort of ‘official’ policy for an entire nation. At the same time I see no credible and acceptable political party ‘in waiting’ that has any desire to reverse the trend and deal with the issues.
As I have said many times before, left up to me I would be bailing out now if I lived alone…
