I just love this story. Potato farmers in the UK are demonstrating outside and lobbying the Oxford University Press building in London’s Parliament Square in protest about the term ‘Couch Potato’. They claim the term is, er, ‘damaging the vegetable’s image’!
They promote the alternative term Couch Slouch which isn’t actually that bad but what they expect the foremost compiler of the English language dictionary to do about it beats me. Although – they might have done enough to get the term recognised. As I understand the rules, new words and terms are only accepted for the dictionary once they have appeared on several occasions in print. As this news has been reported in many, many places then they are on their way. Stopping the use of the term Couch Potato however, will be a much bigger problem.
