Australian Spam
Posted on March 30, 2006 in The Web by Andy @ Yellow Swordfish2 Comments »

Id31001I tip my hat this morning to Australian lawmakers. Australia has become the first country to lay down a code of practice to deal with spam. ISPs and other email service providers are now required to give adequate spam filters to their customers or face fines of up to A$10 million.

More importantly, ISPs will also have to set limits on the amount of email that their own customers can send, including actual spammers, misconfigured customer email servers and crackdown on any machines which have been included in a bot network to deliver spam. Any company who fails to comply with the code could be taken to court by the Australian Communications and Media Authority and face a fine of A$10 million.

OK – so it’s a drop in the ocean and isn’t going to change the annoying volume of spam I receive every day, but it’s a step in the right direction. It’s high time that ISPs globally were forced to tackle this insidious problem. There is no reason whatsoever that my ISP couldn’t reduce the volume of spam I receive – removing the obvious and known candidates and letting the questionable through for me to decide.

Actually, thinking about it, I’m not sure if I ever actually get any spam originating in Australia. Probably not. After all, everyone already knows Australian men have the biggest penises in the world don’t they? At least – that’s what they say.

Hi Andy, Since I started diverting all my emails via Gmail I have zero spam getting through. Gmail manages to catch every bit of spam without any false positives. I delete the spam every day but they get deleted automatically anyway. I love Gmail and I don’t intend renewing my .Mac account when it’s due. Hope you’re well! Mike :-)
