With the rise of Christian bigotry in America and the Shrub’s lucky open season on the federal Supreme Court, it is evident that a challenge to Roe v Wade, the 1973 decision that legalised abortion across the USA, is only a matter of time.
Now the South Dakota state legislature has approved a bill – not yet ratified in to state law however – which calls for jail sentences of five years for doctors who perform abortions, even in cases where the woman has been raped, her health is threatened or she became pregnant in an incestuous relationship. Good ‘ol redneck Christians those South Dakotans.
But through a tangled mass of weblogs, I finally arrived this morning at the site of the Tennessee Guerrilla Women who are calling for a slogan change. They quite fairly point out that what has up to now been negatively dubbed the ‘Anti-Choice’ movement…
…for those who not only want to force unwanted pregnancy on all females, including rape and incest victims, but also to thwart access to emergency contraception and, yes, even the good ol’ birth control pill…
…should be positively renamed to what it really is – ‘War on Women‘.
They further suggest that a good strategy for fighting this evil is a ‘Lysistrata‘ movement. And what a wonderful notion that is.
Women of South Dakota and Tennessee – I may be a man but you have my support for what it’s worth. Go for it.
I was going to say that “the thing that I find bizarre about this kind of character is…”, but really just one of the many things that I find bizarre about this kind of character is the way that the same people are perfectly ready to jump up and denounce Islam for subjugation/second-class treatment of women. Although I’m obviously just missing the part where it’s perfectly OK if it’s done in the name of the right God…
…all the same, I eagerly await the day when the women of South Dakota and Tennessee storm and capture the US Treasury building, then successfully repel a counter-attack led by Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. That’s why they have their much-vaunted right to bear arms, right? So they can overthrow their corrupt government?
…I imagine it can’t be particularly easy fighting on the same side as Cheney, you never know when he’s going to turn around and shoot you in the face for no good reason.</cheapshot>
Well, if the Shrub and cronies get their way it won’t just be the women of South Dalota and Tennessee… Storming Washington is a lovely image but I think they ought to head straight for the Supreme Court.
Well, if you take a closer look, nothing has really changed for women in Afghanistan, where the US “freed” women and women’s rights in Iraq have actually slipped backward since the US invaded. As Mark Twain said, “Thunder is impressive but Lightning gets the work done.”
