Witanagemot

Outside the British Isles, England is often erroneously considered synonymous with the island of Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) and even with the entire United Kingdom. Despite the political, economic, and cultural legacy that has secured the perpetuation of its name, England no longer officially exists as a governmental or political unit unlike Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, which all have varying degrees of self-government in domestic affairs.
The Witanagemot club is a loose collection of bloggers that believe that the current constitutional settlement is disadvantageous to England and support the creation of an English Parliament.

Yellow Swordfish does not necessarily endorse or agree with all of the views of other Witanagemot members.

Onward Christian Soldiers
Posted on December 7, 2005 in Religion by Andy @ Yellow Swordfish5 Comments »

Thanks to Irregular Times for leading me to this story from The Wichita Eagle newspaper of the State of Kansas.

As far as I can tell from this side of the Atlantic, Kansas seems to have been leading the field in trying to replace the teaching of evolution in science classes with so-called Intelligent Design – creationism to most sane people. After the Kansas State Board of Education decided to include more criticism of evolution in science standards for elementary and secondary students, religious studies professor Paul Mirecki tried to balance the books by offering a new course entitled Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism and other Religious Mythologies.

Mr. Mirecki was a bit loose with his tongue and apparently some emails in which he derided conservative, fundamentalist Christians following which, at his own request, his course was cancelled.

This obviously wasn’t enough for one group of the morally vigilant Christian right. They followed the professor on his way to work yesterday morning, finally stopping him on the side of the road where they methodically went about their Christian duty and beat him up citing as they did so, his views on creationism.

So I guess this particular group of Christians didn’t evolve into thugs. They were obviously intelligently designed that way.

Yowch, Andy. That last sentence hurts, but it is a painfully accurate description of American sensibilities. Nicely summed up.

The only caution I would make is that a number of American university types have faked hate crimes against themselves and that _some_ of the details in this one seem a bit inconsistent – see http://michellemalkin.com/archives/004037.htm (who clearly states “If Mirecki was indeed the victim of this alleged crime, it is a travesty and a shame, and the alleged assailants should be prosecuted to the fullest extent.”)

Francis – I’ll try and keep an eye on this story. I very much doubt Malkin would be a fan of Mirecki anyway but I will have a hunt elsewhere.

Just remind me – is christianity a peaceful religion like Islam?
