I like cheese. Actually, I like cheese a lot. Maybe it’s an addiction. I’m not a connesouir of cheese. Not for me those fancy cheeses or the blue veined varieties. No – just give me one of those British Cheddars that stings the roof of the mouth and that you can still taste an hour afterwards. That’s cheese! So yesterday I read a worrying story in the Register entitled Bird flu – we’re all going to die – which hit home.
Let’s be honest, we haven’t had a good flu plague since just after the first world war and seeing as the average time between pandemics is about 70 years, then we are about due. This is a worry – but it got me thinking about the mad rush people will inevitably make to the supermarkets to stock up on ‘essentials’. I suspect tinned goods are the things to go for really – but for me it will be the cheese counter.
I wonder what will come first though. The flu pandemic? The new ice-age due to the stoppage of the Gulf Stream? Massive flooding due to the Ice Caps melting? (Which is a big worry to me as I live only a few feet above sea level). Or the mass riots and economic collapse caused by the lack of oil? Whatever – cheese will see me through.
