The Curse Of Internet Explorer
Posted on September 12, 2005 in The Web by Andy @ Yellow Swordfish3 Comments »

I have been out of the loop a bit for the last few days for a couple of reasons. First off, my Mac has started to crash applications. Opera went first and now Photoshop crashes at startup. I appear to be losing them at the rate of about one a day! I have the feeling that this is going to be painful.

The other reason though is, in some ways, considerably more painful. I decided I wanted to make some changes to the look and feel of the site. This was, after all, basically my first attempt at putting together a WordPress theme and I wanted to improve it. So, over the last few days I have done some great looking stuff. I’ve played with all kinds of things from opacity to fixed position images to dynamic menus. And they all work beautifully. In Firefox. In Opera. In Camino. In Safari. In Omniweb. In iCab. Internet Explorer? Forget it!

I have had it up to what remains of my back teeth with IE and if roughly 65% of all visitors to this site weren’t using this piece of software excrescence then I would just not bother supporting it.

OK. I feel better now.

Forget supporting exploder it is a pile of junk, like the rest of the rubbish that company puts out.

Strong words! I’m not anti-MS and personally think there is both good and bad software coming out of Redmond. Also, when IE was first launched let’s be fair, the competition was pretty grim! Netscape was always diabolical to use. The problem is going down the proprietary route and that’s what has been both IE’s success and it’s Achilles heel.

It’s tempting to drop support for it but then I know a lot of people who use it because they have to (i.e., Company Policy etc). I’m keeping my fingers crossed that v7 will be closer to standards.

Perhaps it will handle png properly.

    Unlikey though.
