Witanagemot

Outside the British Isles, England is often erroneously considered synonymous with the island of Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) and even with the entire United Kingdom. Despite the political, economic, and cultural legacy that has secured the perpetuation of its name, England no longer officially exists as a governmental or political unit unlike Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, which all have varying degrees of self-government in domestic affairs.
The Witanagemot club is a loose collection of bloggers that believe that the current constitutional settlement is disadvantageous to England and support the creation of an English Parliament.

Yellow Swordfish does not necessarily endorse or agree with all of the views of other Witanagemot members.

The Witanagemot Club
Posted on August 27, 2005 in Politics by Andy @ Yellow Swordfish3 Comments »

I’m about to sign up for The Witanagemot Club. This is a movement started by Little Man in a Toque to bring democratic parity to England – the one country in the Union without it’s own parliament and representation.

What’s a ‘Witanagemot’? The Little Man explains:

The Witanagemot club is a collection of bloggers that believe that the current constitutional settlement is disadvantageous to England. The word ‘Witanagemot’ is an old anglo-saxon word used to describe an Anglo Saxon gathering of eminent people. It would include bishops, ealdormen, thegn’s and the like. They would be summoned by the king and would advise him on various issues that were important to the kingdom. They would act as witnesses and be responsible for new taxes, charters and running the country in between monarchs. The witan had a regulatory effect on the king so that his decisions were discussed fully before implementation. The witan could also be responsible for choosing the king. This particular Witanagemot club, however, is open to all, regardless of ethnicity, just so long as you believe that England too is a nation that deserves political recognition.

This laudable aim is not something I’ve mentioned before on these pages but it is something I’m in full agreement with. Well – actually – not totally full. Under the current setup then yes – is is imperative that England has it’s own assembly. And throw out the Scottish and Welsh MP’s (which would decimate the front benches somewhat). But there is an alternative which I would also support and that is close down the new assemblies (apart from perhaps Northern Ireland – I’d much prefer them to rule themselves). In other words – go back to the way it was before Bambi & Co., started meddling with it. I like this idea because I am, on the whole, all for less government and strata’s of government and we can spend the saved money on something useful for a change.

But that’s unlikely to happen so I have to put my full weight behind the campaign to make England democratic and self-governing. And I wont mention Europe.

To find out more about this worthwhile venture, you can visit the special
Witanagemot pages where you can also join up.
