This is old news but I’ve had the plumbers back and been distracted. Thanks to Mike Power for pointing me to this unbelievable slice of American extreme right-wing propaganda masquerading as a children’s book. Yes it’s Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed!

Author Katharine DeBrecht, even has a whole web site up to promote her effort that would have done Nazi Germany or the old Soviet Union proud. I’m sorry, but I find the whole thing mind numbingly evil. This is ‘get them while they are young’ at it’s very worst and most sordid. Let the pretty cartoon illustrations catch the kids eye and then indoctrinate them with the hate-filled text.

In his excellent documentary The Power of Nightmares, Adam Curtis posited the theory that with the fall of the Soviet Union and the ‘communist threat’ that had so consumed post WW2 America, the right-wing establishment required a replacement bogeyman to keep the citizens in line. They got it, of course, on September 11th 2001. My question now is did they really need it, when they have such venomous hate and loathing for a good fifty percent of their own people. Decent, hard-working, good people that form the backbone of the country and continue to fight for the ideals set out by their founding fathers.

If the genuine liberal movement of America had the same corrupted and warped morality of these right-wing bigots, then this would be a book for the bonfire! As it is, I assume it can be bought at a book-store near you. And God help America.
